Gremlins 2: George Gremlin Movie Prop

George Gremlin still has some diehard fans out there, and it's not for no reason. His serious attitude is the perfect compliment to his considerably more goofy partner in crime, Lenny.

Introduction

This exquisitely posed George Gremlin prop is a rare survivor from Gremlins 2: The New Batch. This particular puppet is one of around five total George puppets produced for the movie Gremlins 2 and is what's called a 'throw around' or 'dummy' prop. Typically these variations were used when a puppet was needed to grasp or hold onto an actor. As such, these props were often subjected to less wear during production, which helps explain why this one has endured so well over three decades.

Cinovation Studios typically made one of these style props for each of the main characters in the movie and George was no exception. The George Gremlin and Mogwai design was sculpted by Jim McPherson who has become a great friend and treasure trove of memories which he's been kind enough to share with us over the last couple years.

Early Design

The George Gremlin’s facial design was inspired by Golden Age actor Edward G. Robinson. His trademark scowl, pronounced cheekbones, and tough-guy expression are all reflected in George’s perpetually irritated, tight-lipped demeanor.

In addition, the pairing of George and Lenny was intentionally conceived as a playful nod to Of Mice and Men — mirroring the dynamic between George and Lenny in the classic Steinbeck story.

Prop Restoration

This full-scale George Gremlin prop arrived in remarkably good condition. “Throw-around” puppets like George and Greta were not subjected to the same level of wear as hero animatronics during production, allowing them to endure far better over the past 30+ years. Special thanks to restoration artist Joe Petro, whose exceptional work brought this piece back to display-ready form.
